Three-time National Basketball Association MVP Nikola Jokic suffered a "devastating" knee injury while the Denver Nuggets were defeated 147-123 to the Heat.

Jokic sustained the injury in the latter stages of the opening half during an unintentional coming together with team-mate Spencer Jones.

Jones stepped on the foot of the big man, and he immediately fell to the floor clutching his leg.

The 30-year-old, that is leading the NBA season in boards and dimes, posted 21 points and eight dimes in the contest before incurring the injury.

Jokic is scheduled for an MRI on the following day to evaluate the extent of the issue.

"Immediately, Jokic knew there was a problem," commented Nuggets coach David Adelman.

"This happens in professional sports. Any player that suffers an injury, it's difficult, particularly a player as special as he is. We'll find out more on Tuesday."

"We'll move on together. Of course, currently, I am more worried primarily about Jokic personally and the disappointment of experiencing a situation like that."
