The Iberian nations are again battling the aftermath of widespread flooding in the wake of Tempest Claudia unleashed heavy rain and powerful gusts the previous week.

This meteorological event developed from an area of low pressure that had earlier driven early season chilly and snowy weather through the eastern regions of Canada and the American north-east during the beginning of the eleventh month.

The system moved eastward across the Atlantic in the middle of the second week of November before losing momentum and stopping to the north-west of the Iberian region, snared in a dip of an ever more meandering jet stream.

This system triggered more extensive impacts across western Europe. By drawing warm air from the subtropical zones, the system contributed to thermometers climbing in France's south-west to nearly 30 degrees Celsius, the country's highest recorded autumn temperature.

By last Friday, this warm and humid air mass collided with a frigid air system across more northern parts of the continent, creating a rainfall belt extending from the west of Ireland to the Russian Federation.

In the Britain, this halting system of rain produced exceptionally large precipitation amounts, leading to significant waterlogging in the principality of Wales.

As Claudia continues to weaken early this week, the frigid air will push south, delivering to Europe its first taste of colder weather.
