The direst projected effects of the climate emergency for the UK have been detailed by scientists, ranging from a blistering 4C jump in mean temperatures to a 2-metre surge in ocean levels. An alternative projection predicts a drop of 6C in temperature following the failure of key Atlantic Ocean currents, which would massively disrupt agriculture and energy demand.
Possible Outcomes, Not Guarantees
These consequences, certain ones are connected to critical climate thresholds, are viewed as low probability but possible. The scientists stated that these projections addressed a shortfall in risk assessment that had left the UK ill-prepared for catastrophic possibilities.
"The severe weather events we have detailed are not forecasts, but they are credible," commented the lead researcher who directed the analysis. "The nation has been formulating policy in the absence of the tools to test against worst-case scenarios. We've now given decision-makers what they need to prepare for climate outcomes they wish to avoid, but must not overlook."
A Suite of Severe Conditions Possibilities
Another collection of worst-case scenarios sets out the potential extent of harsh climate between now and the close of the 2100s. These indicate that temperatures could soar in certain periods by up to 6C higher than average, while rainfall could be 300% of standard measurements.
The likelihood of the catastrophic events coming to pass could not be calculated due to unknown factors about what action will be implemented to tackle climate change and how the Earth's systems will react. This analysis was described as similar to national security risk assessments or resilience checks for financial systems.
Key Scenario Highlights
- Four-Degree Warming: Planetary heating soaring past 4C by 2100 could occur if international cooperation fails or if powerful amplifying effects like the Amazon basin perishing release its huge repository of carbon. This would cause intense and enduring heatwaves and droughts hitting the UK in summer.
- AMOC Shutdown: A key circulation system, the North Atlantic current, is weakening and becoming unstable due to ocean warming. A collapse starting around 2030 would lead to a 6C cooling in the UK. "Farming would struggle enormously and water resources would be fundamentally reshaped," noted the lead researcher.
- Accelerated Coastal Flooding: A increase of 2.0-2.2 metres around the UK by 2100 could occur if polar ice in the Arctic and Antarctic disintegrate quickly, inundating low-lying areas. Unlike the other scenarios, this threat is already understood by infrastructure experts.
