New Year Partygoers Advised to Dress Warmly with Snowfall Expected Throughout the UK
Meteorologists have indicated a frosty beginning to the new year, with snowfall expected throughout a lot of the UK. Revelers have been told to dress warmly as near-freezing temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.
Festive Celebrations Proceed Amid Alerts
Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay events are expected to take place, following last year's cancellation. This proceeds amid yellow warnings for snow across northern Scotland.
"A cold New Year's Eve evening for those who are celebrating, so additional clothing will be essential," said the weather service.
Celebrations Under Mostly Clear but Frosty Skies
Across the UK, the weather is set to be suited to fireworks shows, with dry conditions and good visibility. Readings are expected to be chilly, meaning warm wraps essential, said forecasters.
In more northern areas, skies will be cloudier, but this is unlikely to hamper visibility for viewing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.
Broad Snow Warnings for New Year's Day
Heading into Friday, advisories are active for Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and the majority of the south-east of England.

- The public have been urged to leave additional time for trips on the road.
- Hold-ups and call-offs are anticipated on public transport.
The Mercury Set to Drop Even More
With the start of 2026, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are expected to drop further as snow and gale-force winds are likely to affect the north of the country.
About 10cm of snow is forecast to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the highest roads and hills.
Medical Alerts Activated
At the same time, serious cold weather health warnings have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to continue until noon on 5 January, with the mercury likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.
Officials said this indicated the weather was likely to trigger significant impacts across medical and care provision. This includes a potential rise in the fatality numbers among those with health conditions or those aged 65 or over.
The guidance for all is clear: to welcome the new year in good health, dressing for the cold is completely paramount.
