Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Incident

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during a recent discussion.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where he is reported as serious yet stable.

“Not certain at the moment,” he added. “Yet I must mention, hearing him speak, he seemed very positive. Furthermore, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.”

Authorities shared security footage earlier this week of an individual wanted in the attack on the player. A motive for the shooting remains under investigation and police mentioned it remains uncertain if Boyd was targeted. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.

The incident occurred just after 2am on Sunday morning about halfway between Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was transported to a local hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, police said. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn said Boyd has been on his mind “a ton” since the news broke. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse just had a child.

“The first thing I thought about, he just had a kid,” Glenn remarked. “And I’m thinking about his wife, considering his child and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.
“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd was inactive this season, his debut year with New York, after his season was cut short due to injury on mid-August with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.

He signed with New York as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was expected to be a significant contributor of an improved special teams group under Glenn and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during a training camp practice on 2 August and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd has remained around the team all season long while healing from his surgery.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn commented. “In fact, he is a regular at our matches. His commitment is total. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of Texas University in 2019. He later played for Arizona in last year and moved to Houston’s squad later that season. Boyd signed a one-year contract valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
